Preparing for the Global Petroleum Show in 2014

Patrick Cooke lays the groundwork at one of the world's largest energy exhibitions.

June 27, 2012 - Following a very successful participation at the American Water Works Association Conference & Exposition in Dallas, Texas, another show was on the immediate agenda. Held bi-annually, the Global Petroleum Show (GPS) in Calgary is under consideration as a venue in 2014.

GPS bills itself as the meeting place for the world’s oil and gas industry. One of the largest global energy exhibitions, it attracts international leaders, engineers, industry professionals and field operators. More than 2,000 service and supply companies participate in the exposition. This year, over 63,000 attendees gathered to explore the dynamic international display of oil and gas innovation, foster new and potential industry relationships.

The show is held at Stampede Park, home to the world famous Calgary Stampede. The more than 720,000 square feet of exhibit space includes both indoor and outdoor areas. The seven main buildings are augmented by two very large tented area and exhibits are designed to appeal to all level of attendees, from the prospect to the consumer.

In keeping with the western location, attendees get up close and personal with the toughest sport on dirt! The Outdoor Rodeo provided true Calgary hospitality to the outdoor area “where cowboys enter, and legends leave.” Live bareback riding, mutton-busting, wild ponies, saddle-bronco and bull riding – all came together at GPS.

The City of Calgary also extends a welcome by allowing attendees to travel for free on all transit systems during the duration of the show. The site has its own station and a combination of bus and light rail provide excellent service. As well, it relives the traffic and parking congestion.

The only glitch with a late commitment to walking the show was the total lack of hotel accommodations and rental cars. Room rates appear to escalate by a factor of three fold during the show and rental cars, if available, are prohibitively expensive. However, these issues were resolved and the time at the show proved very worthwhile. The only complaint might be the threatening skies. While the show did provide complimentary umbrellas, the indoor exhibits were particularly attractive and necessitated a significant amount of elbowing to make any progress down packed isles.

Trihedral will be at GPS in 2014 and we will make sure of booking everything well in advance.
