Adding a Note to a Notebook

Commentary can be added to the application’s historical record by adding notes to selected notebooks on the Historical Data Viewer page.

In order for a note to be added to either the graph or the table on the Historical Data Viewer page, a notebook tag must first be added using the Tag Selector.  Notebook tags, in essence, are links to encrypted data storage files similar to those created by logger tags.

VTS provides a default notebook tag, SystemNotes, in every application.  You are free to create others if you wish.  In a larger application, it may be convenient to have a separate notebook for each part of the operation.  In other applications, it may be more convenient to simply keep all notes together in one place.

Note: A note can only be added to a single, selected notebook; you cannot add a note to multiple notebooks simultaneously.

Add a Note on the Graph

To add a note to a notebook on the graph:

1.   Select the notebook to which you wish to add a note in the legend.

A rectangle will appear around the notebook to indicate that it has been selected.

2.   Click the Add Note button that appears in the tool bar on the Historical Data Viewer page.

3.   Position your mouse pointer on the graph at the date and time for which you want to add the note.

4.   Click to add the note at the selected date and time.

5.   The Add Note dialog will open and identify the selected date and time.

6.   Enter the text for the note in the Note area.

7.   Click the OK button.

8.   The Add Note dialog will close, and a marker will be placed on the graph at the selected date and time, to indicate that a note has been added.

To read a note, click its marker on the graph.

Notes may be added to the table view in much the same manner. The only difference is that you will click on a cell rather than on the graph in order to set the time and date of the note.

Notes cannot be edited or deleted.  This is a security feature to prevent tampering with the historical record.
