Choice of Action upon Logout

The default behavior of a VTS internet connection is to terminate upon user logout. This option ensures that the remote computer does not continue to hold one of the available VIC licenses.

Some users may prefer to accept the possibility of licenses being held by inactive connections, in exchange for the convenience of not having to create a new connection before logging back in. To configure VTS to hold the connection, one need only make a small change to the “Logged Off” user account.

Briefly, VTS maintains a built-in user account named “Logged Off” for the purpose of logging all activity.  This is the account that is in effect when no configured user is logged in.  You cannot use the name “Logged Off” as a login name – this simply is the account you are connected to when not otherwise logged in.

If the “Logged Off” user account has a password, and has been granted the Internet Client security privilege, then upon logging out from a VTS internet connection, the “Logged Off” user account will take over the active connection.  If the “Logged Off” user account does not have a password or the Internet Client privilege, then upon logging out from a VTS connection, the active connection will be closed and the VIC license will be freed for use by another operator.

Note: The Logged Off user account can be granted privileges.  Since these are also the default privileges for new accounts, it may be desirable do to so, but you should use extreme caution.  Do not create the opportunity for a security breach by granting unnecessary privileges to this account.

Removing the password from the Logged Off user

To remove the password from the Logged Off user account, you use the Delete User button.

The Logged Off user account is a system account and therefore cannot actually be deleted. The effect of “deleting” it is to re-set the password back to nothing.  This action does not change the default system privileges assigned to this user.
