Create a Remote Application

When establishing a new remote application, the first step is to configure the properties for the application, including the designation of a primary configuration server and (optionally) backup servers. To create a new remote application, follow the steps below:

1.   In the VTS Application Manager (VAM), click the "Add New" button.

The "Add New Application" dialog opens as shown.

2.   Ensure that the "Create New" radio button is selected.

3.   Click the "OK" button.

The "New Application Properties" dialog opens.

4.   Define the application by providing:

   A name

   The application type

A title and file name for the initial graphics page

Selecting desired options including AutoStart or Generating Debug Symbols

5.   Select the "This Machine Is Primary Server" checkbox. The name of the local workstation appears at the top of the "Configuration Server Choices" list. The "New Application Properties" dialog should now appear similar to the one shown below.

6.   Click the "Add" button.

The "Add Server" dialog opens as shown.

7.   Provide the name of a backup server.

This may be done either by selecting it from the "Machine Name" drop-down list, or typing the name directly into the field.

Note: It is strongly recommended that you use names rather than IP addresses when specifying configuration servers or service servers, especially in dual-homed situations or in networks where dynamic IPs are assigned.

8.   Press the "Enter" key on your keyboard to input the server's name and enable the "OK" button.

9.   Click the "OK" button.

The selected workstation is added to the configuration server list directly beneath the primary configuration server. This workstation will be the first backup server should the primary configuration server fail.

10. Repeat steps 6 through 9 above until you have added all the backup servers you require to the "Configuration Server Choices" list.

An example of a completed "New Application Properties" dialog is displayed below.

11. Click the "OK" button. The application is generated.

In this example, the workstation named, "Chief" is the primary configuration server for the application. The workstation named, "EngineRoom" is the first backup server which will enable the application to run in the event that "Chief" should fail. The workstation named, "WatchKeeper" is the second backup server that will enable the application to run in the event that both "Chief" and "EngineRoom" should fail.

Now that the remote application has been established, it can be run on the primary configuration server, and you may configure it by adding your tags, pages, and so forth.  To complete the process of building a remove application, the workstations EngineRoom and WatchKeeper (at least), must obtain a copy of the application from the primary server as described in the next topic.
