Defining Read-Only Workstations

You can configure a workstation to have read-only access to an application, regardless of the user privileges assigned to the logged-in user at that workstation.  This may be especially useful for workstations located in unsecured areas or for VTS Internet Client access.

The read-only workstation privilege takes precendence over all other security privileges. If set for a particular workstation, then all I/O write access will be denied.  Attempts to operate any control will result in the following dialog box being displayed:

To configure a workstation as read-only, add the following line to the [System] secton of that computer’s workstation.ini file.

[System]

  ReadOnlyStation  = 1

Note: a workstation.ini file is not named “workstation.ini”.  Substitute the name of the computer to which the configuration variables should apply, for the word “workstation”.  For example, for a computer named “Manager01”, the workstation.ini file should be named “Manager01.ini”.  You may have a different workstation.ini file for each workstation in your network.

If the workstation configured to be read-only is also a VTS Internet Server, then all VTS Internet Client connections to that server will have read-only access.  Note that if you are running a multi-server environment, the read-only server should be configured in Legacy mode to prevent automatic fail-over to a server that is not read-only.
