Drawing a Polygon

To draw a polygon, select the polygon button from the configuration toolbox.

Step 1:  Indicate the start point of the polygon.

When the Polygon button is clicked, the arrow cursor will be replaced by a crosshair on the application page.  This is a prompt for you to indicate where the start point of the polygon is to be drawn. A polygon object may include as many vertices as you wish, but at a minimum it must have three in order to create a meaningful shape.  Indicate the position of each vertex on the screen by left-clicking.

Note: VTS will allow you to create a polygon with only two vertices, but this is functionally equivalent to drawing a line.  Since the default outline for a polygon is "None", a two-vertex polygon will be invisible until you select a visible outline.

Step 2: Stop drawing the polygon:

The polygon tool will continue prompting for points until you right-click.   No vertex will be drawn to the location where you right-click, but a segment will be drawn to connect the first and last vertices.

Note: VTS will allow the segments of a polygon to cross.  A sharp-edged hourglass is a perfectly valid polygon shape.

Step 3:  Set the polygon object’s options

As soon as the polygon has been placed on the screen, the VTS Graphic Editor will be displayed.  Simply selecting the box labeled "OK" will result in a polygon of default fill color being created.

Please refer to Using the VTS Graphic Editor for instructions on using this dialog box.
