FAQ: A Sound File That Plays Using Windows Media Player Won't Play in My VTS Application

Question:       I am trying to use a sound file in VTS, but it won't play.

A:        If the same sound plays using Windows Media player:

Check the media type of the sound file by performing the steps below.

1.   Right-click the sound file.

2.   Select "Properties" from the menu.

If the sound file you are attempting to use is encoded as MPEG layer-3 20 kbps, mono, 11KHz, you should re-encode the sound file in a different format (e.g. the PCM format using a sound editor package, such as Sound Recorder that comes with your Windows operating system), or select a different sound that is not encoded as MPEG layer-3 20 kbps, mono, 11KHz.

If the sound file will not play in VTS, nor will it play using Windows Media Player:

One of the sound files that we distribute with VTScada (named, "buzzer.wav") is ADPCM-encoded, while the other sound files are PCM-encoded. I have found that this ADPCM-encoded file will not play if the "Microsoft ADPCM Audio CODEC" appears in the audio CODECs list after the "Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC" or the "IMA ADPCM Audio CODEC"; however, if the CODEC order is modified, the sound file should play.

Try organizing the CODECs in the following order:

    Microsoft ADPCM Audio CODEC

    IMA ADPCM Audio CODEC

    Microsoft CCITT G.711 Audio CODEC

    Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC

Using this order on a PC running the Windows 2000 operating system allows the ADPCM-encoded file to play.
