Logging and Plotting Data

VTS has the capability of acquiring and displaying live tag data on the Historical Data Viewer page (the replacement to the Trends page in VTS version 7.0 and later). Additionally, VTS can perform long-term storage, subsequent retrieval, and display of historical data (also referred to as file data).

In order to manage these tasks, VTS has a Log Manager Service. The Log Manager Service is responsible for the logger tags for your application, as well as the storage of logged tag values and other tag data.  In a remote application, if a workstation has been specified as the primary Log Manager server, that workstation will record data directly to its disk.

In this chapter, you will find everything you need to know about

•    How the Log Manager works

•    How to configure data logging

•    How to manage log files

•    How to use the Historical Data Viewer (HDV) page to review and plot logged data

•    How to use the Reports page to generate reports based on logged data

•    How to add a HDV display to any application page

•    How to add elements from the Report Tools library to your application pages in order to customize and generate reports on the fly.

Another type of logging is available, should you choose to use it.  See SQL Logger Group Tags for direction on how to log tag data to an SQL database rather than a log file.
