Modem Events List (Event Log)

As mentioned in the previous section, VTS provides you with a series of tools that can be used to display information related to the Modem Manager. These tools can be accessed through the Modem Tools library in the configuration toolbox (see Modem Tools Library for information on the available tools and specific information on the configuration of the Event Log tool.)

The Event Log tool in the Modem Tools library enables you to draw a list that displays modem events. This list identifies some important information regarding the events or activities being performed by the Modem Manager. It shows the last 256 entries that have been saved in the Modem Manager's memory, with the most recent entries appearing at the bottom of the list. As a large number of entries can be displayed in the list, the list scrolls automatically whenever new events occur.

The Modem Events list can be configured to contain a time and date stamp in any number of available formats using the Config.ini configuration file (see "VTS Programmer's Guide:  Config.ini [SYSTEM] Section Settings for the Modem Manager").

Note in particular, variable ModemManagerLogSize.  Unless this value is set in the config.ini file, all log events will be discarded until after the first viewing of the Event Log which will set ModemManagerLogSize itself.

The table below lists some key events that should be displayed in the Modem Events list if a modem has been correctly configured.

Modem Event

Description

Modem Manager Started

The Modem Manager Started event indicates that the Modem Manager has successfully been started.

Workstation Name: Queue Call to Serial Port Name: Phone Number in X Seconds

The Workstation Name: Queue Call to Serial Port Name: Phone Number in X Seconds event indicates the amount of time in seconds prior to the outgoing call being made. If the number of seconds displayed is 0, then there will be no delay in the call-out time.

In some cases, the Modem Manager may have queued other calls ahead of this outgoing call. In such cases, the number of seconds will reflect the amount of time before a call out can be made.

The Modem Name: Dialing to Serial Port Name on Phone Number event indicates that the modem is attempting to connect to a serial port using a configured phone number.

Finally, the information displayed in the Modem Events list can easily be saved for later analysis. You can do so by using the Save Log button (also available in the Modem Tools library). The Save Log button is discussed in the section that follows.
