Remote Configuration Dialog

VTS provides you with an easily accessible tool named the Remote Configuration dialog that can be used to manage the locking scheme for remote applications. The "Remote Configuration" dialog can be opened in one of two ways:

Click the "Remote Configuration" button  in the Configuration Toolbox; or

Click the Page Lock key bitmap  in the Display Manager's title bar.

Note: The "Remote Configuration" button is only enabled for remote applications, and the page lock icon will only appear in the Display Manager's title bar if this or another workstation has locked the currently displayed page.

Once opened, the "Remote Configuration" dialog will appear similar to the example shown below.

Whenever changes are made to the resources of an application, the developer must manually free the lock on an item so that other workstations are able to change the resource in the future. The purpose of the "Remote Configuration" dialog is to show you the lock status of each item in a remote application, and to allow you to manage locked resources.

Note: When updating the file MENUS.TXT, you must take care to update MENUS2.TXT at the same time.

Identity

The Identity status information describes the identity of this workstation, along with the configuration rights that are currently available. The identity will be one of: "Server", "Backup Server", or "Client". The configuration rights will be one of: "Full Configuration", "Locking Rights Only", or "No Configuration".

Details

The "Details" status information shows the current status of remote configuration operations. For example: "This Machine is the Primary Server", or "Updating Primary Server".

Number of Locks

The Number of Locks section, in the upper right corner of the Remote Configuration dialog provides you with a count of the number of source files, non-source files, pages, tag types, tags, and modules that are currently locked.

Search

This field can be used to search for specific resources. When a resource is located, its name and locking information will be displayed in the Items list. Entering an asterisk (*) in the Search field will cause the Items list to return to its original state and display all resource items and applicable locking information.

Sort By Lock

When selected, this checkbox changes the display of the Items list to show locked resource items at the top of the list. When deselected, the Application Items list is sorted alphabetically.

Items List Area

The Items list display is affected by the settings of the "Search" field and the "Sort By Lock" checkbox.

Note: You can resize each column by dragging the divider appearing between it and the next column.

Name

Displays the name of each resource item, including its extension (if applicable).

Type

Displays the type of each resource item: source file, non-source file, page, tag type, tag, or module.

Locked By

Displays the name of the workstation that has locked each resource item.

Locked For

Displays the action that prompted each resource item to be locked: addition, modification, or nullification.

Update Item

When a resource item is selected in the Application Items list, clicking the Update Item button causes VTS to sends the changes made to the selected resource item (by this workstation) to the primary configuration server. From there, the changes are propagated to all workstations running this application. The lock on the resource item is then released.

The Update Item button is disabled if the selected item is not locked.

Note: This operation is final and cannot be undone by the Rollback Item or Rollback All buttons.

Update All

When clicked, the Update All button sends all changes made by this workstation to the primary configuration server, from which the changes are propagated to all workstations running this application. As this operation will cause VTS to overwrite all original files with the modifications made to them, you will be prompted by a dialog asking you whether you wish to proceed.

Note: This operation is final and cannot be undone by the Rollback Item or Rollback All buttons.

Rollback Item

The Rollback Item button causes all changes made on this workstation to a selected resource item to be discarded, and the lock to be released provided that the item has not been yet been updated. This button will be disabled if the selected item is not locked.

Once a selected resource item has been updated, you cannot roll back the changes. The Rollback Item button only performs reversals to items that have been modified, but that have not yet been updated.

Rollback All

The Rollback All button causes all changes made on this workstation to all the resource items in the Application Items list to be discarded, and the locks to be released provided that the items have not yet been updated.

Once all resource items have been updated, you cannot roll back the changes. The Rollback All button only performs reversals to resource items that have been modified, but that have not yet been updated.

Lock Item

Used to lock a selected resource item for modification.

The Lock Item button is disabled if the selected resource item is already locked.

Release Lock

The Release Lock button enables you to release the lock on a selected, locked resource item. If the selected resource item has been modified, but the modifications have not yet been updated, the modifications will be lost.

The Release Lock button is disabled if the selected resource item is not locked.

Add Files

The Add Files button enables you to add files to be remotely configured.

Remove File

Used to remove a selected file item from the Application Items list. This operation applies only to files that are not essential to the running of the application. You will be prompted by a dialog asking you whether you wish the selected file to only be deleted from the "Application Items" list, or from the application and all workstations running the application.

The Remove File button is disabled if the selected item is not a file or if it is locked.

Close

Closes the Remote Configuration dialog.

Application resources are generally handled the same way by the Remote Configuration dialog with one exception: The AppMod.SRC root file requires special treatment. This is the root file for your application and identifies all of the code files that are integral to the running of your application. Information on working with the "AppMod.src" root file and "Remote Configuration" can be found in Lock and Update the AppMod.SRC File.

VTS keeps a record of each remote configuration action in history. Each time a user utilizes the Remote Configuration dialog to lock, update, rollback, or remove a file, the information is logged to Alarms.log, and can be viewed in the History list on the Alarm page.
