The steps to create an application are very nearly the same whether the application is to be standard or layered, local or remote. Differences will be described where appropriate
1. Run VTS.
2. Click the Add New button on the VAM. The Add New Application dialog opens.

3. Ensure that the Create New radio button is selected, as shown above.
4. Click the OK button. The New Application Properties dialog opens.

5. Type a name for the application in the Name field.
6. Press the Enter key on your keyboard to input the application's name.
VTS strips any spaces and/or invalid characters (see Valid Application Path Characters) from the name you've entered and displays the result in the Path field. This will be the name of the application directory that will contain all the files and data for your new application.
Note: If you choose to do so, you can specify an application path other than the one automatically entered by VTS. This can be a relative or absolute path, and must adhere to the valid application path characters. It should be noted that using a relative path for your applications will make it easier to move the application to a different location in the future.
7. Choose the application type from the Type drop-down list.
• If this is to be a standard application, select Standard Application.
• If this is to be a layered application, select the name of the custom application layer.
8. [Optional] Type a valid name for the application’s first page in the Page Title field. The default name, Overview, is perfectly acceptable. If you do not need to enter a different page name, skip to step 10.
9. Press the Enter key on your keyboard to input the page title.
VTS strips any spaces and/or invalid characters from the page title you've entered and displays the result in the Page File Name field. The completed New Application Properties dialog should appear similar to the one shown following (in this case, showing a standard application).

• If creating a local application, skip to step 15 to finish.
• If creating a remote application, continue.
10. Select the checkbox: This Machine Is Primary Server.
The name of the local workstation appears at the top of the Configuration Server Choices list. This will be the primary configuration server for your new application. The New Application Properties dialog should now appear similar to the one shown in the following image.

11. Click the Add button. The Add Server dialog opens as shown:

12. Select the name of the server you wish to use as a backup server from the Machine Name drop-down list, or enter the name or IP for the server in the Machine Name field.

Note: It is strongly recommended that you use names rather than IP addresses when specifying configuration servers or service servers, especially in dual-homed situations or in networks where dynamic IPs are assigned.
13. Click the OK button.
The selected workstation is added to the configuration server list directly beneath the primary configuration server. This workstation will be the first backup server should the primary configuration server fail.

14. Repeat steps 11 through 13 above until you have added all the backup servers you require to the Configuration Server Choices list.
15. Click the OK button.
A dialog appears informing you that the new application is being created. This dialog displays the application title and the name of the application directory that will be created for the new application within the VTS directory.

The VAM now displays the title of the new application in the Available Applications list.
