1.1 Adding a New Application

The first step is to add a new application. All new applications are begun using VTS's application management tool, the VAM as described in the following instructions.

1.  Start VTS (if you are unsure how to start VTS, see Starting VTS) to open the VTS Application Manager (VAM).  Figure 1

2.  Click the Add New button to open the Add New Application dialog (Figure 2).

3.  Ensure the Create New radio button is selected.

4.  Click the OK button of the Add New Application dialog.

The New Application Properties dialog opens (Figure 3).

Take a moment to examine the New Application Properties dialog. It includes fields that enable you to enter:

•      a name and path for your new application,

•      the type of application you wish to create,

•      the title and file name of the initial application page, and

•      the primary and backup configuration servers (for "remote" or "networked" applications).

5.  Enter "Tutorial" in the Name field.

6.  Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

Note that "TUTORIAL\" is automatically entered in the Path field. This will be the name of the directory within which all of the files, directories, and data for your new application will be stored.

7.  Select Tutorial Simulated I/O from the Type drop-down list.

Note: The Type drop-down list displays the names of different types of VTS applications upon which you can base your application. Selecting "Tutorial Simulated I/O" indicates that this application will be based upon the tutorial simulator application layer, which includes all the data required to run the tutorial. Information on the other types of applications can be found in the VTS Developer's Guide.

8.  Enter "Booster Station" in the Page Title field.

This will be the title of your first application page. We are using this title, as this application page will feature the equipment and processes related to the Booster Station, as outlined in our system plan.

9.  Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

Note that "BOOSTERSTATION" is automatically entered in the Page File Name field. This will be file name of your first application page.

The remaining application properties are used for networked or remote applications, and are therefore not required here, since the tutorial application is not a networked application. When you have entered all of the properties indicated above, the New Application Properties folder should look like the example in Figure 4.

10. Click the OK button. The Add New Application dialog will briefly be displayed (Figure 5) to indicate that VTS is generating the new application. Once created, the new application's name will be displayed in the VAM.
