15.5 Copying User Accounts

Many of the larger applications you create will have multiple user accounts that require identical user privileges, especially if the operators of the system perform similar tasks. Configuring these user accounts could become time consuming; however, VTS provides you with the useful ability to create one user account with the privileges that will be common to the larger group of accounts, and then copy that account as many times as you require.

This feature enables you to set up generic accounts based on privileges typically granted to different operators on the basis of their responsibilities.

You should be logged on to the Manager1 user account. If you are not, do so now.

1.  Click the Manager1 button to open the Options dialog.

2.  Click the Users button.

The Accounts dialog opens and displays the accounts currently configured.

3.  Select the "Jack" user account from the list of users.

4.  Click the Copy button on the Accounts dialog.

The Copy Account dialog opens, looking nearly identical to the Add Account dialog (Figure 188).  Note that all of the privileges assigned to the Jack account have been set in the copy. All that remains is to set a new username and password.

5.  Enter "Jill" in the New Username field.

6.  Enter "Pass" the New Password field.

7.  Enter "Pass" in the Confirm Password field.

8.  Click the OK button.

The Copy Account dialog closes. The Jill account has been added to the list of user accounts in the Accounts dialog.

9.  Close the Accounts dialog.

As you saw when creating the Jill account, you didn't have to select privileges for the Jill account; they were automatically copied from the Jack account for you. The usefulness of this feature becomes readily apparent when you have 20 operators, each with the same 17 privileges.
