Whenever your application cannot equipment values due to a communications error, or an equipment failure, it reports invalid data. Invalid data is indicated on-screen using one or both of the following:
• A display of asterisks (*) in place of a value
• Black in an object's indicator area (Note: Your VTS developer may have configured your application to display a color other than black to indicate invalid data. Ask your VTS developer about any special colors configured for your application)
Examples of invalid data indicators are displayed below.

The pump bitmap on the left is displaying invalid data as indicated by the black color displayed in its indicator area. The equipment fields in the center are displaying invalid data as indicated by the asterisks (*) in place of the values. The station symbols on the right are displaying invalid data as indicated by their black centers.
Once the equipment or communications problem is resolved and communications are re-established, the invalid data indicator is removed from the object's display. The image below displays the same objects as above with out invalid data indictors.

Once the equipment problem is resolved and communications are re-established, invalid data is no longer reported.
Note: Invalid data is reported for all tags for a brief time when your workstation initially begins to run your VTS application. Once the application has completely loaded and has begun communicating with your equipment, the invalid data indicators are removed.
When invalid data is being reported for a piece of equipment, you may be able to enter a value for the equipment manually until the error has been fixed. This temporary value is known as "manual data". Manual data is discussed in Manual Data Shortcut Menu Option.
The presence of a question mark beside a value indicates that an operator has marked that data as questionable. Questionable data is discussed in the section that follows.
