Get From Server

A Get From Server operation is the first stage in remote configuration. This operation is the process whereby a client requests a copy of an application from a server, and downloads required core files from that server (described below). The "Get From Server" operation is performed on a client by following the steps listed below:

1.  Install and run VTS.

2.  Click the VAM's Add New button. The Add New Application dialog opens.

3.  Select the "Get From Server" option.

4.  Click the OK button. The Choose Server dialog opens.

5.  Select a server from the Machine Name drop-down list (if the server is on the same network as the client), select "All available servers" to view remote applications on all servers on the network, or enter the server's name in the Machine Name field.

6.  Click the OK button. The Find Servers dialog opens and displays the name(s) of the server(s) and the status of the applications found.

7.  Select the name of the server from which you wish to obtain the remote application.

8.  Click the Inquire button. VTS retrieves the names, types and status of the remote applications found on the selected server and displays them in the Applications Available On dialog. (Note: If an asterisk is displayed next to an application's name, it is an indication that your workstation already has that application.)

9.  Select the application you wish to retrieve from the list.

10. Click the Acquire button.

During a get from server operation, four core files are transferred. These are:

      GDI.wif

      SecMgr.dat

      SecurityManager.ini

      Sync.wif

One file is generated locally:

      <Wkstn.dat>

No data sources are configured until the application is run.

The four core files transferred during a Get From Server operation are described in the sections that follow.
